How to stabilize a metal bed frame

- Stabilize it by cutting out a piece of plywood that fits snugly into the shape of your bed, making sure it covers entirely, with no gaps above or below. Then place this into the frame, face down, and screw through each hole from the inside to secure it.
- This should keep the frame stationary and prevent it from moving – even if you have a particularly strong earthquake or storm.
- Place thin pieces of wood on top of the legs for support, then place a heavy object on top. You can use anything from textbooks to bricks. This will help keep your bed frame in place and, if the object you use is unusually heavy, prevent it from being knocked around during an earthquake or other natural disaster.
- If desired, you can also add more screws to the legs, so they provide more support to your bed frame and aren’t likely to move as much.
- Place thin foam pieces on a carpeted floor and use them as a shock absorber. This is particularly useful if you have flooring sensitive to scratches, such as hardwood or tile.
- Apply thin pieces of foam – similar to the kind used in shock absorbent running shoes – to the legs and feet of your bed. This will keep them from scraping across the floor, keeping your bed stable at all times.
- If your bed is already rock-solid, consider placing a small ottoman underneath it. This will provide a layer of foam and wood between the bed frame and the floor, protecting both.
- If you have a rocking bed as well as a mattress on top of it, but the pieces of foam on the legs before putting the mattress back on. This will prevent both from moving too far forward or backward and allow some movement to occur without causing harm.
- If your mattress is not too heavy, you can place a box spring underneath it. This will help stabilize your bed frame, preventing it from moving around and causing damage.
